The apparel industry is in the midst of a dramatic sea change when it comes to policy and sustainability. With a slew of new legislation, regulation and consumer guidelines coming — notably out of the European Union — brands and organizations need to adapt quickly to ensure they don’t fall out of line.

For this quarterly briefing, we spoke with policy experts from the Fashion Conveners’ member organizations to surface how brands can prepare for upcoming policy changes.

A round-up of recent publications and launches from our members.

  • CLIMATE SOLUTIONS PORTFOLIO. The Apparel Impact Institute (Aii) has launched an online registry to enhance transparency and collaboration among brands, retailers and financiers in reducing Scope 3 emissions in the apparel sector. This tool aligns and verifies impact programs, ensuring clear criteria and reporting for decarbonization efforts.

  • FASHION FOR GOOD PARTNERS JOIN FORCES WITH FASTFEETGRINDED FOR CIRCULAR FOOTWEAR. Fashion for Good has launched a new pilot with brand partners adidas, Inditex, Target and Zalando and footwear recycling innovator FastFeetGrinded to test and validate the innovative footwear recycling process. This will support the uptake of recycled content in footwear, driving the change towards a more circular footwear industry.

  • PREFERRED FIBER AND MATERIALS MATRIX. In Textile Exchange’s latest Preferred Fiber and Materials Matrix, the impact tool has undergone a significant update with a focus on human rights, chemical management and initiative integrity. This aims to support standards systems to view their performance across impact areas in a standardized way, and support brands to inform and guide material sourcing decisions.

  • REGENERATIVE AGRICULTURE OUTCOME FRAMEWORK. This new open-source framework from Textile Exchange helps the fashion, textile and apparel industries align on outcomes for assessing the holistic impact of regenerative agriculture. It was designed to create shared expectations worldwide while respecting the knowledge of local communities and Indigenous Peoples, fostering collaboration and shared responsibility between brands and growers.

  • SUSTAINABLE APPAREL COALITION (SAC) 2022 ANNUAL REPORT. The SAC released its 2022 Annual Report, sharing the Coalition’s progress on driving collective action toward a more responsible industry. The report highlights the SAC’s growing community, the ongoing evolution of the Higg Index suite of tools, its Decarbonization Program, deepened partnerships and collaboration and more.

  • TAKING STOCK OF PROGRESS AGAINST THE ROADMAP TO NET ZERO REPORT. In June, the Aii released the follow-up to its 2021 Roadmap report. Using SAC, Worldly and Textile Exchange data, this update recalibrates sector emissions and showcases case studies of companies/organizations taking action toward meeting the industry’s climate goals.

  • ZDHC IMPACT REPORT. In its second Impact Report, ZDHC presents recent developments within ZDHC and the industry at large.
